Emeritus status of volunteers

    Hi all,

I wonder if anyone has an Emeritus status for their volunteers they'd like to share information on.  We're looking at introducing something for volunteers who 'retire' from volunteering, or are no longer able to fulfil their duties but still want to be involved with us.

I'd be very grateful for any information on what you offer emeritus status volunteers (Museum entry, invites to social events etc.)

    Thank you!

    Hi Lindsay,

This is a great question! At my previous institution, we counted emeritus volunteers as those who gave more than 500 hours over their volunteering career.  We gave those volunteers a year's family membership to the museum, a small box with a plaque on top with the volunteers name/years volunteered, and an invitation recognition to that year's awards ceremony. I thought the box was a little kitschy, but our older volunteers seemed to like it. If a volunteer had more than 1,000 hours over their volunteer time, we continued to invite them to the volunteer social events. You can obviously tailor the hour amount requirement to your museum.

Most of the volunteers who reached the higher level emeritus status didn't continue to come to events; most of them retired for health reasons. I liked being able to give them a family membership because even if they weren't interested in visiting the museum themselves any more, they were allowed to put it in someone's name who would use it. Most often this was a son/daughter/neighbor with kids.

I do thing emeritus volunteer recognition is something we needed to analyze and decide what would be the most thoughtful and valuable way to recognize our volunteers who contributed a lot. Sometimes it was hard to tell- someone would "retire" for two years for health or personal reasons, and then jump back in with us because their health problems were resolved or we were able to reengage them.

Do you have anything in place currently?

Thanks for bringing this topic up, Lindsay, and sharing your program, Samantha. We implemented an emeritus status 2 years ago and it is interesting to hear how other museums handle it.  For us, volunteers can become emeritus when they retire after a significant number of years of volunteering - usually in the ballpark of 15 years, but we intentionally didn't define a specific number so we can offer emeritus status on a case by case basis. Emeritus volunteers get an emeritus volunteer badge which they can use for free admission to the museum for life. They also continue to get the store and restaurant discount that all volunteers receive. They are invited to all continuing education sessions each month,  the annual appreciation event, and they can participate in our annual volunteer art show. Emeritus volunteers do not receive quarterly guest passes for friends and family, a free coffee or tea while volunteering, or service award pins at 5 year increments - those benefits are just for active volunteers. Communicating this new status to our volunteers was the only hiccup in implementing it. There was a lot of confusion about how this was different from the informal perks that some, but not all retired volunteers had been receiving prior to this implementation.
